Of Light and Courage [Private - Link]

Post by Aryll on Thu Feb 11, 2016 2:41 pm

These days, it was as though the inn was always packed with travelers. Although Aryll had head tales of the lands of Labrynna and Holodrum, she never imagined that they'd come to visit so often. When word had come out that a ceremony would be held to reveal who the Legendary Hero would be, it was as though everyone was eager to attend the event from all over. From what many of the Labrynnan and Holodran people had told her, the story of the Goddess, Hero, and Triforce was but a mere myth and a story to pass time. Since the neighboring lands had seldom to do with the sages and gods, they did not hold onto the beliefs as strongly as the Hylians.

However, as the story goes, Hyrule was not limited to just the territory it was now. After a civil war several thousand years back, it is said that the land split up into three separate kingdoms, thus the creations of Labrynna and Holodrum coming into the picture. How sad, Aryll thought, that because they had split off from their ancestry, that they had decided to ignore the calls of their gods. She truly felt sadness that they did not have faith in legends, only coming out of curiosity.

Though as Aryll had heard time and time again, with the reveal of a new hero, that meant that a darkness was coming, and because of this, the kingdom would be calling to arms. There was a lot of talk of people who planned on enlisting into the army, as if they felt some obligation to serve until the hero of legends... and Aryll wondered what her brother had thought about all of this.

She hadn't seen her brother much since he had enlisted. In fact, it had been several months since the last time they had spoken in person. They had written to each other, but that was mostly all that she had heard. Tales of how he had gotten to meet the princess and how he had escorted her across the land... it was all she ever dreamed of. He was going on all these amazing journeys, and she was stuck here, at a tavern serving drunks. Still, the stories she had heard were amazing... she just wished she could experience them for herself.

She wondered if Link had gotten to meet the hero. Being named after him, it must have been awkward to meet him and have to explained that he was named after his ancestry. Rumors had it that he was a member of the Royal Guard, so he must have met him at some point! Especially if he had been working so closely to Princess Zelda.

Aryll wanted to tell him of the dreams she had been having. For the past several weeks she had been having these terrible dreams of the castle burning in flames, and an ominous beast standing over it with a laughter so wicked, it deafened her ears. She had written that she had wanted to see him, though he hadn't been replying much lately. She just hoped he knew where to find her, of if he remembered.

Under the old oak tree near their old home when they were just kids. She lounged under it as the sun rays peeked through some of the branches, warming her cheeks as she continued to write in her journal.

Re: Of Light and Courage [Private - Link]

Post by Link on Thu Feb 11, 2016 11:39 pm

After having met Princess Zelda things hadn’t really been much the same as they were before. While it was true that his routine was the same, usually involving him relaxing or training his swordarm, but there was a big difference in his life and something he never expected would occur. After his escort mission with the princess he could at least say that the two of them had become friends. They were both able to converse with each other and for a simple knight like himself it was something he never expected. Though being able to converse and be friends with royalty was big for him, it was hardly as big as the truth he learned while in the lost woods.

“A hero…” Link muttered as he stared upwards at the sky. The realization that he was the reincarnation of the very heroes of Hyrule, the namesake he was named after. Despite all that he was told, he could not see himself as one. He believed Saria’s words, but he never did anything he could really say was something he would consider earning the title of hero. His past selves worked hard for their title and were rewarded with the title of hero based on his actions, but he was nothing but a simple knight. If he deserved the title then there were others that surely deserved it as well. Regardless of this fact he accepted such a title. He did it not for fame, but because the sheer idea of a hero arriving seemed to motivate the people and Zelda seemed to place a lot of trust into him. He did not wish to let them all down even if he felt he did not deserve the title just yet.

Closing his eyes with a sigh, Link opened one eye and looked down into his hand, almost forgetting he held a letter addressed to him. Wasting no more time he begun to read the letter and let out another sigh. Just reading the letter caused him to feel terrible the moment he realized just who wrote the letter. “Aryll…” Link said softly as he placed away the letter and rushed out. Just reading the letter made him realize how long it had been since he had seen his precious little sister, the very motivation he needed to become a knight.

Though his father was one of the reasons he became a knight, protecting his sister and earning money for her was his main reason he ever even joined the knights in the first place. It hurt that he had to leave his sister as he worried a great deal for her, but at the same time he knew that she would be able to take care of herself as she was a tough one. He rushed forward heading toward the place he knew she would most likely be and once he begun to close in at the area he slowly began to walk.

Ahead was an old oak tree, an area that was near to his old home. No surprise Link could see the young girl he called sister sitting underneath the tree. Slowly he walked up to her trying his best not to get a bit emotional. “Aryll!” Link called out to the girl as he walked up to her.

Aryll finished writing in her journal as she set it down beside her and leaned back against the trunk of the tree, taking a deep breath. She looked around, watching the people who passed by who were going on about there day. All of them seemed so peaceful... not one of them seemed to realize what storm was about to come.

She looked down, rubbing her forehead as she sighed. The dream would not leave her mind, no matter how hard she tried. She shivered at the thought of it, trying to block it out until she heard a familiar voice call out to her. Immediately her ears perked up as she turned her head in the direction, seeing her brother in his shiny knight armor as she smiled brightly.

"Link!" she called back at him, immediately getting up from her spot and running toward him at full force to huge him tightly. "You look so different! You got some muscles!" she laughed teasingly. "Have you really been that busy? How is the training? What's your rank now? Are you friends with the princess now that you two have met, or does she not come around that much?"

Link smiled as he watched his sister get up and rush directly towards him and at a fast speed as well. Despite watching her rush towards him he wasn’t quite expecting the sudden impact he would receive from his little. With the sudden impact to his chest, Link’s eyes widened almost falling backwards, but managed to hold his ground. Almost losing his breath due to the impact to his chest, Link eventually caught his breath and smiled as he listened to his sister, patting her head as she spoke.

“Whoa whoa whoa! One question at a time!” Link said closing his eyes with a small chuckle. Pulling out of his sister’s grasp, Link held onto both of her shoulders and looked over at her with a smile. “You’ve grown quite a deal as well” Link said closing his eyes with a grin. Another thought was coming up in his mind more so him worrying that other boys were probably trying to get with his sister, but he’d rather not ruin the moment bring up that topic. Letting go of his sister he merely walked over to the oak tree and fell backward on his back, laying on the ground with a smile. To say the least, Link was a pretty lazy person, usually sleeping during his down time. This was one of his favourite spots to sleep in.

“Ahh…so nice” Link said taking in the warmth of the sun. Sure he did the same thing over at the barracks, but there was a great feeling being at home. It was usually these times that ink would just forget all about the stresses of life, even the questions his sister gave him just fluttered out of his mind.

When Link had stumbled a bit on the impact, she looked up at him triumphantly until he had then moved over to the oak tree, immediately sitting down and taking in the warm sunlight. She knew she was being a bit impatient, but she couldn't wait for anymore explanations as she bounced in anticipation, staring at him desperately.

"Come ooooon, I want to know! What have you been doing!? What is the princess like!?" she flopped down in front of him, leaning forward excitedly. "It must be a huge honor to be the one that gets to escort her! And with the hero ceremony coming up, there must be a lot going on..." she trailed off for a moment and looked to her side for a moment.

"...Do you think the hero will be able to stop whatever evil is coming? Maybe it's just me, but..." she could feel the words piling up and her anxiety fluctuate as she quickly shrugged and shook her head. "Never mind, forget I said that. What is the princess like!?"

The sunlight felt so nice, but the sudden shadow and voice calling out to him made him open one eye and peek out at his little sister who was speaking to him. Closing his eyes once more he let out a sigh with a smile as he sat up once more and sat against the tree. It seemed getting some rest at home would have to wait a bit, not that he minded of course.

“Well..” Link said beginning to answer her question only for her to cut him off again with another question. He remained quiet listening to her speak out all she had before he could actually speak once more. Link was always quite a silent guy, but in this regard his sister was totally different as she was quite talkative. He listened to her with a smile and chuckled slightly at her enthusiasm, but raised an eyebrow as the enthusiasm faded a bit while speaking about the hero.

When she finished her words Link stared at her wondering just what made her become so serious all of a sudden, but took her request and ignored it for now. Closing his eyes and scratching his head, he kind of felt a bit nervous talking about the princess. “The princess…she is a very kind, pretty, and generous person…she is someone who will do whatever it takes to make people smile” Link said with a small smile as he looked downwards

Aryll stared at him suspiciously as he had looked down, almost bashfully. She had paused for a moment to try and process it until a large ear to ear smile slowly rose against her cheeks and she giggled quietly. "You like her." she said deviously. "You reeeally reaaally like her!" she laughed a bit louder.

"Isn't she supposed to get married to some prince!? What about the hero!? I am a strong believer of those stories. You know every princess in the history of history ends up with the hero, right? That's some rough competition, but I have faith in you!" she teased.

"So have you met the hero though? I mean, everyone says he''s a member of the royal guard, so he's a knight like you!" she went on. "Lately there have been so many people coming to the inn from all over the place. Everyone is super excited to meet him."

Immediately upon the girl’s realization that Link liked the princess, Link immediately looked upwards as Aryll and his eyes widened in bewilderment “wh-what?” Link said completely caught off guard by his sister’s claim. He was ready to refute such a claim, but the topic once again shifted to another topic once again. In a way he should have expected the topic about the hero being brought up, but he never expected so soon. It surprised him how fast the rumours were spreading about the hero.

“The hero…yeah I met him…”
Links said calmly as he lay back down upon the ground calmly and closed his eyes once more trying to enjoy the nice weather. “…are people really that excited for the hero?” Link asked calmly.

"Are you KIDDING ME!?" she shouted as she pressed both of her hands on the side of her head in surprise. "Of course everyone is excited! It's been centuries since the reveal of the last hero! I know that usually the reveal of a hero is followed by some great evil or whatever, but he's a LEGEND! It's like if Din, Nayru, or Farore were to suddenly appear and greet their people!" she explained.

"The hero is a beacon of hope for everyone - not just Hyrule. I've heard stories from people that traveled from Holodrum and Labrynna - they are all anticipating the ceremony. There are a lot of people who are trying to move into town so that they can enlist and serve under him!" she went on, grinning widely. "I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to the stories. When I was little I used to wish that the hero could be a girl, because I totally would have kicked butt."

Suddenly she realized that maybe she was going on a little bit too much about his competition and immediately changed the subject again. "Sorry, I digress. I know that it's super exciting and all, but to be honest, I can't imagine the burden it has... and the sacrifices he has to make. It makes me a bit nervous... I've been having these really weird dreams, and well... he's not in the best shape. Though I guess no one in my dream really is..."

Re: Of Light and Courage [Private - Link]

Link immediately closed his eyes tightly, cringing a bit at the sudden loud voice of his sister assaulting his ears. Once more Link opened up one eye and looked over at her sister with a bit bewildered look. “I-I think you are over exaggerating” Link said letting out a small awkward chuckle as took into her words. He could at least understand why she was so excited about the hero. Their father used to talk so much about the hero, telling the two of them of the hero’s tales. These tales inspired Link so much and as a child he used to tell Aryll these stories after their father passed away. It was a way for them to ease the pain. How could he have ever imagined that he himself was the hero?

While it was true that some of it was not an over exaggeration, it did make him think about all this even further. So many people were placing so much hope into a person that had barely even done anything to be considered worthy of the title. All his accomplishments were merely done by his past selves. He could not take their credit.

He listened as Aryll spoke much more seriously, speaking about the sacrifices the hero was going to make due to his title and Link couldn’t help but sit up once more and stare forward at the scenery deep in thought. “Yeah…” Link said before looking over at Aryll “Dreams? What of?” Link asked.

Re: Of Light and Courage [Private - Link]

Post by Aryll on Fri Feb 12, 2016 7:10 pm

Aryll pursed her lips for a moment when he had asked her about the dreams that she had been having and sighed as she slouched back, her hands holding her up in a lazy sitting position. "Well, I've been having these weird dreams for a couple weeks now... it's kind of scary. I either have a nightmare or no dreams at all." she explained.

"Maybe it's because the news of the hero has me all worked up, but you can't deny that something must be coming. The cycle of the hero doesn't reincarnate unless a disturbance strong enough to shake the earth is coming. So maybe it's just my subconscious being overdramatic, but I keep having these terrible dreams of the castle engulfed in flames."

She tried to pick out the details in her head. While the dreams were generally the same, it was as if she were stuck in a loop, and every decision she made mattered. She had recollections of the previous dreams with each new one she had, using that knowledge to go further without making the same mistakes she made before. It reminded her of the legend of the Hero of Time - when he became stuck in Termina, only to have the first day start over again if he were to take too long or die by accident.

"The sky is so dark with smoky clouds, and the only source of light is coming from the castle's flames. Everyone is screaming and running away... and there's this terrible monster... it almost looks like the demons we heard about in stories. It was huge, looming over the castle. And then I remember being pushed by a stranger and they were shouting that we needed to make a run for the Temple of Time. Apparently Zelda was there in a last effort to try and protect the Triforce... but there was so much going on, I mean, it's probably just a dream."

Link remained silent as he listened to Aryll speak up about the dream she held. Link was never one to merely brush off a mere dream and his belief in Princess Zelda’s dreams was proof enough of that. He listened to her speak of a terrible dream involving the castle being on fire and the involvement of demons as well. Was she right to say that with his appearance into the world it would mean danger was also to follow. All of this for the triforce…this dream was far too detailed and it unnerved Link slightly. Was it merely a warning for the future, or merely an unchangeable fate that was to come soon?

“It’s nothing but a dream”
Link said collapsing back on the ground closing his eyes once more. “Pay no mind to it.” Link said lazily as he let out a yawn. It wasn’t that he did not believe his sister’s words, no it was quite the opposite, but he did not wish for her to worry. Whether this was a fate that was to occur or not, Link would do all he could to prevent it and protect not only those that he cared for, but for many other he could as well.

"You're sure..." she asked hesitantly. "I mean... I guess. Maybe it's just too much excitement over the last few weeks," she shrugged and laid down on the ground, staring up at the sky. Maybe she was thinking too much about it. If she got it off her mind and distracted herself a bit, maybe her dreams would become a bit more optimistic.

"I wonder what father would say about all this. Whenever I used to have bad dreams he always knew what to say," she murmured toward Link. "And I wonder what he'd say about the hero coming back, and if he'd serve under him." She wished that she had gotten to spend more time with her father. She was still very young when he had disappeared, but she remembered him clearly.

"Anyways... who else have you met up at the castle? Seems like that's all you've spent your time doing lately, is hang out up there with the princess."

Link was quite glad that the conversation about the dream had come to an end and that it seemed that Aryll seemed to listen to his words about paying them no heed. Link had hoped that with this topic now at an end it would also be the end of these sensitive topics, but the girl brought up another sensitive topic, one that affected only the two of them.

“I know dad and even mom would both be proud of us”
Link said opening his eyes as he stared up at the sky watching the clouds go by. His father was such a kind man that did whatever it took to spend time with the two of them. Thinking back to all the sacrifices that his father made for the two of them made Link proud, yet sad he couldn’t help his father even further. All the stories his father told him of his mother also made him wish that he was able to meet such a loving woman. Though he could not remember her, the feelings of her love he received when he was a toddler still remained with him.

“Who else? Um well your mistaken to think I’ve been hanging out with the princess most of the time….I mean yeah, I do spend some time with her…but not a lot…most of the time its either missions or training. Hmm..oh! well the forest sage is staying over at the castle so there is that”

"The Forest Sage..." Aryll mused for a moment as she attempted to think about it. "You mean Saria? Wait, you met a kokiri!?" her eyes lit up. "For the amount of times I've gotten lost in the woods, I still haven't met one! Are they really little kids?" she tilted her head in curiosity. It's as if all the fairy tales she heard as a child were suddenly very real. It was strange in a way.

"When I come to the ceremony, you're gonna have to introduce me as everyone. I get special privileges being the sister of such an important knight," she winked. "I don't want you holding out on me, okay? I expect an introduction to everyone! Saria, the Princess, the hero, Prince Perseus..." she trailed off. "There are so many important people to keep track of,..."

Link’s eyes remained closed but a frown appeared on his face the very moment he listened his sister speak about how she would go into the Lost Woods numerous times. With one hand Link began to rub his temples as he let out a groan. “Aryll, how many times have I told you about going into the forest alone? It’s called the Lost Woods for a reason” Link said with a sigh. Despite his tone it really was quite calm. He sort of knew that Aryll wouldn’t listen and he knew that exploring was something she liked, but as an older brother he would always be worried about her.

He let out a deep sigh as he listened to her talk about meeting the others at the castle, but the sun was so nice and he started to drift off. “Yeah...” Link said as if in a dream not really listening to her but suddenly sat up in a jolt “Wait huh?! You’re going to be at the ceremony?!” Link said quite stunned. He had honestly thought about keeping the whole reincarnation of the ancient hero a secret from his sister, but it turned out she will be learning about his secret along with the others.

"Well, duh, I'll be at the ceremony! Did you really think I was going to miss out on something that big? There are people from all over the place coming to see him, so yeah, I'll be there!" she chuckled. "I mean, this is a huge deal. I've dreamed of meeting the hero for so long, and it's actually happening in our lifetime!" she smiled wide.

"But enough about the hero, I'm sure you're probably jealous of all the attention he's getting. When will you have some more free time? I really want to go on an adventure with you soon. Maybe we can go out in the field again and just go exploring." she nodded. "I do it all the time on my own, but it's not the same without you."

So there was no helping it, Aryll will be there no matter what. He knew even if he told her not to and even if they guarded the room and everything they would still find a way into the ceremony just to see who this hero was. The girl was super excited now, but he was a bit curious to see how she’d react at seeing her own brother being revealed as the hero. Such a role was definitely not fun and games, but at the very least it was nice to take things more carefree at times.

Eventually Aryll finished her small discussion about the hero, causing him to smile a bit the fact that it would be pretty hard to be jealous of one’s self. She asked when he would have time and he wish to go exploring with him once more and Link merely looked up at the sky. “Things at the castle have been getting rather busy…mostly due to the whole ceremony business. But I have missed traveling with you. The only time I ever really get to go out of the kingdom is during special missions and even then it only for fighting” Link said before letting out a sigh as he looked over to his sister with a smile. “Epona misses you” Link said as he closed his eyes and grinned “and so did your big brother, that why I set aside a bit of time to spend home” Link said. He missed home and though it didn’t have anything special, it was still a dear place to him.

"Awwwwww I miss Epona!" Aryll frowned. "Why didn't you bring her?" she tilted her head a bit before falling onto her back to stare at the sky. "Well... I just hope that things don't get too crazy after the ceremony..." she sighed. "I really just don't want a war, but it seems pretty inevitable at this point. So be safe out there, okay? And if Epona get's hurt, I'll hurt you," she narrowed her eyes and smirked.

"But I think it's pretty cool that Zelda made King Galadhion and King Asther truce temporarily for the ceremony. I bet Galadhion is pretty irritable about it," she giggled. "OH MY GOD, DID YOU MEET ASTHAR!?!" she immediately shot up, gasping with wide eyes. "IS HE AT THE CASTLE!? He is literally the most adorable King I've ever seen and he's gonna change Holodrum for the better, I just know it!"

Link couldn’t help but let out a small nervous laughter as he listened to Aryll threaten him about Epona’s safety. The girl liked his horse quite a deal and for the two of them Epona was like family to them as well so when Aryll threatened to hurt him if Epona got hurt he truly believed in her words. “We’ll be fine and nothing will happen to Epona…at least for my sake” Link said saying the last bit under his breath but gave her a smile regardless.

Link was ready to relax a bit, but immediately he almost jumped the very moment his sister let out the big outburst about Prince…or rather King Asthar. He was honestly surprised to see his sister like that. Sure she was already fangirling over the hero, but now she was fangirling over the king of Holodrum as well. She was definitely a strange one to be sure. “Asthar…” Link suddenly softly and calmly said as he looked downwards deep in thought.

“The world is changing, changing due to the naked desires of the heart…just what future will await us Link? Will it be a world of strife, or a world of stagnation? Let us see what future will come…”

Those words returned into Links head, echoing as if those very words were said to him right now. “Yeah I met him” Link said snapping back to the conversation as he looked up at Aryll and raised an eyebrow. “He hasn’t arrived at the castle yet…but you have a crush on him?” Link asked.

She blinked for a moment as her face went red and she looked down, crossing her arms, "No.... I just... I just really admire him, 'sall..." she tried to play it off. She didn't want him teasing her in front of him if he did introduce her to him. That was not the kind of humiliation she'd be able to survive. "I mean... he is really cute, but... that's it! That's all the attraction there is!" she frowned.

"But I'm not shallow, I swear! I think he's a wonderful ruler! He wants to help Holodrum prosper, which is such a big improvement from his father and his father before him!" she quickly said. "I just... ugh, nevermind. He's cute, that's all I think," she stuttered for a moment before giving a defeated sigh.

"When did you meet him then?" she asked. "If he's not at the castle, how did you meet him?"

Link looked at the girl quite dumbstruck as he watched Aryll suddenly begin to defend herself and try to disprove her sudden attraction to the young king. He sat there just staring at her with his dumbstruck look, but then suddenly he put his hand to his mouth and covered it as his cheeks began to puff up clearly holding back laughter. Eventually he couldn’t bare it any longer and released his hand as he laughed out loud. “Hah you really do have a crush on him” Link said as he continued to laugh.

Slowly his laughter began to regress until he finally calmed down. Letting out a sigh he looked over at Aryll and smiled softly. “It was 7 years ago actually, I was only a 13 year old trainee back then and we were ordered to travel to Holodrum for an assistance mission…” Link said. As he spoke about this he merely glanced away and looked out at the scenery. The mere smiling face soon turned to a more calm one as he looked out. He closed his eyes as he continued to think back to the time. “He is a kind and friendly individual…quite energetic as well” Link said.
